Enjoying the warm spring air<3

She smiled a little, relief washing over her features. I knew I had made the right decision, no matter how much abuse I would take from her father. I just hoped that the kids wouldn’t suffer the same fate.

“Thank you, Carmine.”

“No need to thank me, sweetie.”

“Why?” It was the wrong thing to say. I knew it was the second the word left my lips. Her eyebrows raised, and I started preparing to right what I had said.

“My dad is really sick.” There was an edge to her voice, but I guess she decided my question was reasonable. She explained everything her mother had told her and I sighed.

“They want to see you and the kids, too.” Of course they do. I didn’t want to see them, but I kept this to myself.

“That’s fine, honey.”

I closed my book as she sat down on the edge of the bed.

“What’s up, honey?”

She sighed deeply, and I frowned.

“Well… My parents want to see me.”

My heart seemed to stop as I remembered the only time I had ever spoken to her father.

The kids had been in bed for several hours before Hibiscus made it home from work. I had been able to tell that something had been bothering her for the past couple of days, so when she walked into the bedroom and said, “I need to talk to you.” It came as no surprise.
